Welcome! We invite you to embark on an artistic journey framed like a short tale, narrated by the<\/i><\/span> artist Carmen Bouyer<\/a> and made possible by The Nature of Cities<\/a> team. This story bridges the urban and the rural in a quest to create art forms that connect us with the larger landscape. The story is an invitation to imagine our own very personal ways to listen and connect with the places we inhabit. Here we will follow <\/i>the artist’s story of coming home to Paris region in France after years living abroad in cities. As many urbanites in Western European cities, Carmen had the feeling that the cultures of relating with the land there were lost since a long time. She felt disoriented, attracted by far away practices that honours nature, but aware of the cultural appropriation violence that they are enduring. She had to look where she came from: central Paris. Some words helped her beautifully. It was when Robin Wall Kimmerer<\/a>, mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation said in an interview on <\/i>For The Wild radio<\/a>:<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

APR\u00c8S SEPT ANNEES PASS\u00c9ES A L’\u00c9TRANGER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entre les Etats Unis d\u2019Am\u00e9rique appel\u00e9s Turtle Island par certaines Nations indiennes et la Turquie, je rentre \u00e0 Paris en France, ma ville natale. C\u2019est un profond chamboulement. Au contact des personnes magnifiques qui ont crois\u00e9 mon chemin j\u2019ai compris l\u2019importance de conna\u00eetre la nature des lieux o\u00f9 l\u2019on a grandi. C\u2019est pour tisser profond\u00e9ment ces liens que j\u2019ai choisi de m\u2019immerger dans la nature dans la for\u00eat de Fontainebleau au bord de la Seine \u00e0 une heure au Sud de Paris, la ville o\u00f9 j\u2019ai grandi, et de m’y installer. Le village s’appelle Samois-sur-Seine<\/a>, paisiblement accroch\u00e9 \u00e0 un coteau en bord de fleuve, on peut s’y baigner le matin, et l’apr\u00e8s midi se promener dans les bois. Aller vers un en-sauvagement comme introduit par l’\u00e9co-philosophe Joanna Macy<\/a>, une fusion avec le paysage. AFTER SEVEN YEARS LIVING ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between the United States \/ Turtle Island one of the Native American term and Turkey or T\u00fcrkiye, I return to Paris in France, my native city. It is a profound change. In contact with the magnificent people who crossed my path, I understood the importance of knowing the nature of the places where one grew up. It is to deeply weave these links that I chose to settle in nature in the forest of Fontainebleau on the banks of the Seine, an hour South from Paris, the city where I grew up. The village is called Samois-sur-Seine<\/a>, peacefully clinging to a hillside on the banks of the river, a place where you can bathe in the morning and walk in the woods in the afternoon. A greening of the self as introduced by Joanna Macy<\/a>, a melting into the landscape. This is how I set up my studio and my life on the river banks by the forest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

JE SUIS RENTR\u00c9E AU PAYS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impr\u00e9gn\u00e9e des spiritualit\u00e9s et sagesses li\u00e9es \u00e0 la terre rencontr\u00e9es au cours de mon long s\u00e9jour. Des enseignements am\u00e9rindiens du nord-est et du sud-ouest de Turtle Island, des nations Haudenosaunee, Algonquin, Pot\u00e9 Watami, Din\u00e9 et Lakota, au cosmopolitanisme New Yorkais, \u00e0 la spiritualit\u00e9 m\u00e9sopotamienne et soufi rencontr\u00e9e dans la r\u00e9gion \u00e9g\u00e9enne de la Turquie, je me suis sentie profond\u00e9ment nourrie par les fa\u00e7ons d’\u00eatre des personnes que j’ai rencontr\u00e9. De cette grande p\u00e9riode d’introduction aux diff\u00e9rentes cultures de ces r\u00e9gions, j’ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 l’importance de me connecter aux pratiques culturelles qui maintiennent et honorent la connexion intime avec la Terre M\u00e8re ici aussi en Europe, en France mon pays d’origine, et plus sp\u00e9cifiquement dans le Bassin parisien o\u00f9 j’ai grandi en tant que parisienne. Ici, les voix des personnes d\u00e9tentrices de connaissances \u00e9cologiques traditionnelles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9duites au silence, souvent depuis des si\u00e8cles, par diverses formes de honte, d’interdiction et parfois d’extermination au nom de la religion ou d’une id\u00e9e de la modernit\u00e9. Des pratiques violentes \u00e0 l’encontre des gardiens des sagesse de la terre qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 impos\u00e9es \u00e0 l’\u00e9tranger par la colonisation des Europ\u00e9ens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aujourd’hui, alors que les mouvements de d\u00e9colonisation des id\u00e9es et des pratiques prennent plus d’ampleur, de plus en plus de personnes s’int\u00e9ressent aux traditions et innovations locales qui tentent de restaurer et de r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des patrimoines culturels situ\u00e9s respectueux de la nature. En m’installant dans ma nouvelle vie dans le village de Samois-sur-Seine pr\u00e8s de Paris, j’ai plong\u00e9 dans un espace d’introspection. J’ai fait des recherches sur les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes sp\u00e9cifiques du bassin parisien, les modes de subsistance traditionnels associ\u00e9s ainsi que les univers symboliques associ\u00e9s \u00e0 ces lieux. Une r\u00e9gion du monde si famili\u00e8re et dont j’avais pourtant tant \u00e0 apprendre. Arch\u00e9ologie d’une indig\u00e9n\u00e9it\u00e9 francilienne, et traces de pratiques culturelles dans la tendresse et le respect de la terre\u2026 C’est cette histoire dans laquelle je puise pour d\u00e9velopper mon parcours artistique et que je souhaite vous raconter aujourd’hui. I CAME BACK TO MY COUNTRY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Full with the land-based spiritualities and wisdoms encountered during my long journey abroad. From the Native American teachings of the Northeast and Southwest of Turtle Island from the Haudenosaunee, Algonquin, Pot\u00e9 Watami, Din\u00e9, and Lakota Nations, to New York’s cosmopolitanism, to the Mesopotamian and Sufi spirituality encountered in the Aegean region of Turkey, I felt profoundly humbled and nurtured by the ways of the people I could encounter. From this great period of introduction to different cultures, I realised the importance of connecting with cultural practices that maintain and honour the intimate connection to the great whole of Mother Earth here too in Europe, in France my home country, and more specifically in the Parisian Basin where I grew up as a Parisian. Here the voices of people holding traditional ecological knowledge have been silenced sometimes for centuries through various forms of shaming, interdiction and at times extermination in the name of religion or of an idea of modernity. Violent practices against wisdom keepers of the land that were brought abroad through colonization by Europeans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, as more movements focus on the decolonisation of ideas and practices, an increasing number of people are paying attention to local traditions and innovations that are restoring and regenerating geographically specific nature-honouring cultural heritages. While settling into my new life in the village of Samois-sur-Seine, I plunged into a space of introspection and research of the Parisian basin ecologies and traditional ways of subsistence. The location was favourable, the village being ideally situated between the largest forest in the region, that of Fontainebleau, and the river Seine just upstream from Paris. A region of the world so familiar and yet of which I had so much to learn from. Archaeology of a Francilien indigeneity, and traces of cultural practices in tenderness and respect of the earth… It is this history in which I draw in order to develop my artistic path and that I wish to tell you today. CONNAITRE LES TEMPS ANCIENS ME RELIE A LA TERRE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est en m’int\u00e9ressant aux \u00e9volutions g\u00e9ologiques et pr\u00e9historiques de la r\u00e9gion parisienne, que j’ai pu trouver les histoires de reliance \u00e0 la terre les plus puissantes. Toucher du doigt les temps anciens de cette terre me bouleverse, ils renversent ma perception \u00e9troite du monde en l’\u00e9largissant fantastiquement, une exp\u00e9rience qui m’ancre dans une humilit\u00e9 calme et ancestrale. C’est comme si le temps m’accueillait, si minuscule, au creux de ces mains d’infini. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imaginez il y a des milliers d\u2019ann\u00e9es, le temps d\u2019avant, bien avant la construction de la ville de Paris. S\u2019\u00e9tendait ici un oc\u00e9an dont on trouve encore les larges \u00e9tendues de sable parmi les arbres de la r\u00e9gion et sous les pav\u00e9s de la ville immense. Je per\u00e7ois la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation mouvante au fil des temps, la grande \u00e9pop\u00e9e nomade des arbres. Imaginons la derni\u00e8re \u00e8re glaciaire, l’\u00e8re froide du gen\u00e9vrier, du pin et du bouleau de la Pl\u00e9istoc\u00e8ne, qui en migrant vers le Nord alors que les climats se r\u00e9chauffent laisseront la place au ch\u00eane, \u00e0 l’orme, au h\u00eatre, feuillus des temps doux de l\u2019Holoc\u00e8ne que nous connaissons aujourd’hui. Les steppes o\u00f9 erraient les troupeaux d’\u00e9lans, se transforment en for\u00eats o\u00f9 r\u00e8gnent les cerfs et les sangliers. Des temps oc\u00e9aniques, il reste de larges chaos rocheux, gr\u00e8s intemporels qui mod\u00e8lent l\u2019espace de fa\u00e7on surr\u00e9aliste dans toute la for\u00eat de Fontainebleau. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

KNOWING ANCIENT STORIES CONNECTS ME TO PLACE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was when I got interested in the geological and prehistoric histories of the Paris region that I was able to find the most powerful stories of connection to the land. Getting to know the ancient times of this earth moved me. It reversed my narrow perception of the world by enlarging it fantastically, an experience that anchored me in a calm and ancestral form of humility. It is as if time welcomed me, so tiny, in the palms of its infinite hands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine thousands of years ago, the time before, well before the construction of the city of Paris. An ocean stretched out here, and you can still find wide stretches of sand among the trees of the region and below the city pavements. I perceive the vegetation moving across times, the great nomadic experiences of trees. Let’s imagine the last ice age, the cold era of juniper, pine and birch of the Pleistocene, which by migrating northward as the climate warms up will give way to oak, elm, beech, hardwoods of the mild Holocene that we know today. From the steeps where roamed the elks, comes the forested times were the stags and the wild boars ruled. From the oceanic times there remains large rock formations, timeless sandstone that shapes the Fontainebleau forest’s landscapes in surreal ways. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

La for\u00eat de Fontainebleau est le premier espace occup\u00e9 par des groupes humains dans cette steppe qu\u2019\u00e9tait alors l\u2019\u00eele de France.<\/p>

The Fontainebleau forest is the first space occupied by human groups in this steppe that we now call l’Ile de France<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

S\u2019y niche de nombreux rochers orn\u00e9s<\/a>, t\u00e9moins magnifiques d\u2019une empreinte humaine artistique sur le paysage. L’art rupestre de la r\u00e9gion Ile de France se d\u00e9veloppe particuli\u00e8rement au M\u00e9solithique (9500 \u00e0 5500 avant J.-C). Plus de 2000 abris orn\u00e9s on \u00e9t\u00e9 inventori\u00e9 par l’association locale de sauvegarde de l’art rupestre, le GERSAR<\/a>. Ceux-ci sont grav\u00e9s de motifs g\u00e9om\u00e9triques r\u00e9p\u00e9titifs (stries, quadrillages) dont la symbolique a \u00e9t\u00e9 interpr\u00e9t\u00e9e de divers fa\u00e7ons selon les \u00e9poques: imitation des structures g\u00e9om\u00e9triques des huttes, traces de rites r\u00e9p\u00e9titifs, etc. Nous en parlerons plus tard. Cet ensemble rupestre, totalement m\u00e9connu des parisiens, est enfaite le second plus important en France apr\u00e8s la Vall\u00e9e des Merveilles situ\u00e9 dans l’arri\u00e8re pays de Nice dans le Mercantour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces gravures nous r\u00e9v\u00e8lent un monde vibrant, o\u00f9 la culture s’est m\u00eal\u00e9e au paysage de fa\u00e7on totale. Ces marques impr\u00e9gn\u00e9es dans le rocher, comme une peau magique stri\u00e9e, elle nous parle de se qui se qui se passe sous la notre, dans l’espace magique de notre \u00eatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, numerous ornamented rocks<\/a> can be found, magnificent witnesses of an artistic human imprint on the land. Rock art in the Ile de France region developed particularly in the Mesolithic period (9500 to 5500 BC). More than 2000 decorated shelters have been inventoried by the local association for the protection of rock art, the GERSAR<\/a>. These are engraved with repetitive geometric motifs (striations, grids) whose symbolism has been interpreted in various ways depending on the period: these include the imitation of geometric hut structures, traces of repetitive rites, etc. We will talk more about it later. This rock group, totally unknown to Parisians, is in fact the second most important in France after the Vall\u00e9e des Merveilles in the hinterland of Nice in the Mercantour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These engravings reveal to us a vibrant world, where culture has blended with the landscape in a total way. These marks impregnated in the rock, like a magical striated skin, speak to us of what is happening beneath our own, in the magical space of our being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The rise of empire was in part facilitated by the deracination of local mythologies. As climate collapse worsens, a return to multi-species mythmaking might just be what saves us.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

ACCUEILLIR LES CYCLES DE REGENERATION<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

En retournant aux traces les plus anciennes de mythe dans la r\u00e9gion parisienne, j’ai trouv\u00e9 celui d’une puissante d\u00e9it\u00e9 f\u00e9minine immanente, celle de la m\u00e8re nature, qui pr\u00e9side aux cycles de mort et de renaissance. En effet, les grottes stri\u00e9es de motifs de la for\u00eat de Fontainebleau ont \u00e9t\u00e9 interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es par l’arch\u00e9ologue am\u00e9ricaine d\u2019origine lituanienne Marija Gimbutas (professeur d’arch\u00e9ologie Europ\u00e9enne \u00e0 l’Universit\u00e9 de Californie) comme faisant r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 une telle divinit\u00e9, dans son livre culte “Le Language de la d\u00e9esse<\/a>“:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Des carr\u00e9s avec des dessins de filet ou des lignes parall\u00e8les, ou marqu\u00e9s d’une croix ou d’un X, qui se pr\u00e9sentent sous forme de sablier, sont grav\u00e9s sur les parois des grottes post-pal\u00e9olithiques. Environ deux mille grottes contenant de telles gravures sont inventori\u00e9es en France; elles sont concentr\u00e9es dans la r\u00e9gion parisienne, dans les aires de Seine-et-Marne, de Seine-et-Oise et du Loiret (K\u00f6nig 1973). Certaines sont connues sous le nom de “grottes aux f\u00e9es”. Imaginer ces centaines de grottes stri\u00e9es qui peuplent la for\u00eat comme autant d’ut\u00e9rus de femmes enceintes, espaces de transformation rituel, m’a beaucoup \u00e9mue. Un mythe certainement, mais aussi une espace imaginaire que j’invitait \u00e0 nourrir mon pr\u00e9sent et mon art. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans son ouvrage, Gimbutas propose une analyse approfondie des motifs g\u00e9om\u00e9triques que l’on trouve en Europe durant le M\u00e9solithique et au d\u00e9but du N\u00e9olithique, p\u00e9riode qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de l’h\u00e9g\u00e9monie des cultures patriarcales bas\u00e9e sur l’agriculture et l’\u00e9levage. Cet “alphabet m\u00e9taphysique” de motifs est associ\u00e9 selon elle au culte de l’essence f\u00e9minine du monde. Cette religion de la vieille Europe qui honore “tant l’Univers – corps vivant d’une D\u00e9esse-M\u00e8re-Cr\u00e9atrice – que tout ce qui en lui participe de sa divinit\u00e9<\/em>” selon les mots de Joseph Campbell qui pr\u00e9face le livre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

WELCOMING REGENERATIVE CYCLES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going back to the earliest traces of myth in the Paris region, I found that of a powerful immanent female deity, Mother Earth, who rules over the cycles of death and rebirth. Indeed, the patterned caves of the Fontainebleau forest have been interpreted by Lithuanian-born American archaeologist Marija Gimbutas (professor of European archaeology at the University of California) as representing the interior of the womb of such a deity, in her iconic book “The Language of the Goddess<\/a>, Unearthing the Hidden Symbols of Western Civilisation”:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Squares with net patterns or parallel lines, or marked with a cross or an X, which appear in the form of an hourglass, are engraved on the walls of post-Paleolithic caves. About two thousand caves containing such engravings have been inventoried in France; they are located in the Paris region, in the areas of Seine-et-Marne, Seine-et-Oise and Loiret (K\u00f6nig 1973). Some are known as “fairy caves”. They evoke a womb or uterus, and were probably as sacred in prehistoric times as similar caves containing sacred objects are in historical and modern times (\u2026) These mysterious places are surely dedicated to the goddess-she who holds the living, life-giving water.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Imagining these hundreds of striated caves that populate the forest like so many wombs of pregnant women, spaces of ritual transformation, moved me a lot. A myth certainly, but also a fertile imaginary space that I invited to nurture my present and my art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her book, Gimbutas offers an analysis of the geometric patterns found during the European Mesolithic and early Neolithic transition, a period that marks the arrival of patriarchal cultures based on agriculture and livestock. This “metaphysical alphabet” of geometric shapes found throughout the continent between 7000 and 3500 BC is associated with the cult of the feminine essence of the world. This old European religion honours “both the Universe – the living body of a Goddess-Mother-Creator – and everything in it that participates in her divinity<\/em>” in the words of Joseph Campbell who prefaces the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The concept of regeneration and renewal is perhaps the most remarkable and dramatic theme we perceive in this symbolism. It seems more appropriate to see all these images as aspects of one Great Goddess with her essential functions – giving life, giving death, ensuring regeneration and renewal. The analogy is obvious with nature itself; through the multiplicity of phenomena and the continuity of cycles of which it is made, one recognises the fundamental unity of nature.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dans un abri \u00e0 Noisy-sur-\u00c9cole, deux chevaux grav\u00e9s encadrent un relief d\u2019origine naturelle en forme de pubis f\u00e9minin. Les fentes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 en grande partie fa\u00e7onn\u00e9es et ces am\u00e9nagements ont pu faciliter des \u00e9coulements d\u2019eau. \u00a9  E. Alors que mon immersion de le temps long de ma r\u00e9gion continuait, \u00e0 la recherche de r\u00e9f\u00e9rences artistiques ancestrales qui honorent la vie, j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 frapp\u00e9 par une grande d\u00e9couverte. La plus ancienne gravure trouv\u00e9e dans la for\u00eat de Fontainebleau montre un pubis f\u00e9minin entour\u00e9 de deux chevaux. Dite “de la S\u00e9gognole<\/a>“, elle est litt\u00e9ralement la “grand-m\u00e8re” de la manifestation humaine dans la for\u00eat, car cette gravure a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e 10 000 ans avant toutes les autres. Elle a environ 20 000 ans et est contemporaine des grottes de Lascaux. Le plus touchant est que cet oeuvre d’art premi\u00e8re est aussi une fontaine, elle est dynamique. Les anciens de l’\u00e9poque ont travaill\u00e9 la roche pour permettre \u00e0 l’eau de s’\u00e9couler \u00e0 travers ce symbole du sexe f\u00e9minin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette oeuvre d’art si primordiale m’a remplie de joie, me faisant accueillir mon f\u00e9minin de fa\u00e7on renouvel\u00e9, fier de sa force. Quelle ressource vive que cet h\u00e9ritage grav\u00e9, dans une r\u00e9gion du monde o\u00f9 la puissance transformatrice des femmes a trop longtemps \u00e9t\u00e9 brid\u00e9e. C’est accompagn\u00e9e de ces mythologies associ\u00e9es \u00e0 un f\u00e9minin ancestral que je me suis plong\u00e9 plus en avant dans des formes d\u2019exploration artistiques du monde et de moi-m\u00eame. Ecoutant mon instinct, dans mon atelier et dans la nature, j\u2019ai plong\u00e9 dans un univers multi-sensoriel, sans normes, en couleurs et en rythmes. Je me reliais alors au mouvement \u00e9co-f\u00e9ministe \u00e0 travers des actions spontan\u00e9es, reli\u00e9es \u00e0 la terre, \u00e0 l’eau et \u00e0 mon corps que je percevait alors comme un grand tout sans s\u00e9paration, ample, immense, et sans fin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As my immersion in the long time of my region continued, in search of ancestral artistic references that honour life, I was struck by a great discovery. The oldest engraving found in the Fontainebleau forest shows a female pubis surrounded by two horses. This engraving “de la S\u00e9gognole<\/a>” is literally the “grand mother” of human manifestation in the forest, it was made 10,000 years before all the others. It is about 20,000 years old and is contemporary with the Lascaux caves. What is most moving about this early art form is that it is also a fountain, it is active. The ancients worked the rock to allow water to flow through this symbol of female sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This primordial work of art has filled me with joy, making me welcome my feminine in a renewed way, proud of its strength. What a living resource this engraved heritage is, in a region of the world where the transformative power of women has been curbed for too long. It was with these mythologies associated with an ancestral feminine that I plunged further into artistic exploration of the world and of myself. In my studio and outside in nature, listening to my instincts, I plunged into a multi-sensory universe, without norms, in colours and rhythms. I connected myself then to the eco-feminist movement through spontaneous actions, connected to the earth, to water <\/strong>and to my body that I could then perceive as a great whole without separation, ample, immense, and endless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
