Aliyu Barau

Professor Aliyu Barau is a trans-disciplinarian climate change expert and landscape ecologist. He is Geographer and Environmental Planner by training and research. Since 2021, he has been a Professor and subsequently Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Bayero University Kano, Nigeria. He also chairs Environment and Livelihoods Theme (ELITE) at the Centre of Drylands Agriculture – a World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence. Aliyu is passionate about transdisciplinary research and has been working on bridging knowledge barriers through his research works that cut across sustainability science, clean energy, urban informality, spatial planning, transitions/transformation research, urban resilience, historic urban landscapes, climate change adaptation and mitigation, decarbonization, protected ecosystems, ecosystem restoration and governance of socio-ecological systems. He has contributed to global environmental science and policy through lead authorship of reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), International Resource Panel of the UN Environment, Global Environmental Outlook 7. In 2020, the Urban Climate Change Research Network of Columbia University, New York appointed Director for West Africa. Prof. Barau serves as Principal Investigator and co-Investigator for various international research grants that worth approximately One-Million US Dollars. He has published papers in many reputable journals including Nature (the world’s no.1 science journal), Ambio, and Natre Ecology and Evolution among others. He is Principal Editor of the forthcoming cities and climate change edited book elements to be published by Cambridge University Press. Barau has travelled to all continents and has co-authors across continents. Aliyu likes books, walking, indigenous trees, birds’ songs, desert music, and documentary films.
