Caterina Amengual Morro, PhD, is a ecologist, environmental consultant, and public servant whose life’s work weaves together science, policy, and ecology to regenerate the relationship between humans and nature — especially through the lens of water, landscape, and ecosystem restoration. With over two decades of experience spanning public administration, academic research, education, and entrepreneurship, she brings a holistic and systemic approach to environmental transformation. Her expertise lies in socio-ecological systems, the integral water cycle, sustainable sanitation, green urban planning, nature-based solutions (NbS), and ecological infrastructure — fields in which she has not only designed and led projects but also shaped public policy. Caterina holds a PhD in Biology from the University of the Balearic Islands, where her doctoral research explored sustainable sanitation through a socio-ecological lens. She also holds a Master’s degree in Landscape Analysis and Design and a Bachelor’s in Environmental Sciences. Her academic work has taken her from the Stockholm Environment Institute and UNESCO’s Chair in Sustainability to cooperation projects in Morocco and Peru, and her scientific publications contribute to the global dialogue on water management and ecological restoration. Currently, Caterina works as a public officer at the Climate Change Office of the Balearic Islands’ Regional Government, where she contributes to strategies for adaptation, mitigation, and ecological transition in the face of climate emergency. Her career in public service has also included roles as General Director of Natural Protected Areas and Biodiversity for the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands, or Islands Director for the Environment at the Island Council Government, and as an environmental officer at the municipal level, and at the Urban Plan Office at the City of Palma (city of half milion habitants). In parallel, she continues her independent consulting , offering strategic planning, design, and implementation of sustainable water systems, green infrastructure, and regenerative landscape projects for both public institutions and private clients. Her approach is participatory, interdisciplinary, and deeply grounded in place-based knowledge. On of her latest works include a regenerative plante to reuse the waste water at the Natural Park of Dragonera to close the water cycle in the island. Caterina is also a passionate educator and communicator. She has taught from secondary schools to universities, led numerous workshops on environmental issues, and regularly gives talks on topics ranging from biodiversity and climate adaptation to water depuration and urban resilience, including a recent TEDx talk. She is known for her ability to translate scientific knowledge into accessible, inspiring narratives that activate both civic engagement and institutional change. She collaborates with the Interdisciplinary Ecology Group at the University of the Balearic Islands, among other academic and civic networks, and is deeply involved in local and international initiatives promoting ecological literacy, circular water systems, and resilient urbanism. She is currently designing a new platform to help cities and communities thrive by reconnecting with water, ecological intelligence, and living systems. With her rare blend of policy experience, scientific rigor, and creative vision, Caterina stands as a bridge between disciplines, between theory and practice — and between the world as it is, and the one that is becoming possible.
