Springfield

Richard Johnson is a visual artist based in Springfield, MA whose primary focus is promoting the development of youth and artists through self-expression, education, and action. Richard graduated from MCLA with a degree in Sociology in 2014 and, after discovering his talent and passion for teaching, founded Chess Angels Promotions Inc., an art-based non-profit organization that carries out his personal mission, i.e. supporting the spiritual, mental, physical, and financial growth of the community through art, education, and action-based programming. In 2023 he joined the Board of Directors for Commonwealth Murals; in 2025 he was elated to join the Board of Directors for Art for the Soul Gallery. Overall, his art style implements powerful silhouettes, allowing viewers to see a reflection of their own identities when interpreting his messages. His inspiration originally derives from his experience working with youth who are developing communication skills through expressing themselves on canvas. His work continues to invite all viewers to take the journey of relating more to themselves through cultural education. He looks forward to working with Art for the Soul and promoting local emerging artists and believes his particular “Soul Food Art” style compliments the Art for the Soul mission by putting community first.
