Laura Shillington

Laura Shillington is faculty in the Department of Geoscience and the Social Science Methods Programme at John Abbott College (Montréal). She is also a Research Associate at the Loyola Sustainability Research Centre, Concordia University (Montréal). She holds a PhD in geography from York University (Toronto) and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Instituto de Geografía, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM, Mexico City). Dr. Shillington’s research program broadly explores urban social–nature relations. In particular, she is interested in understanding how everyday life in urban areas, especially in mundane spaces such as the home, is embedded within multi-scalar ecological politics—from gendered human–nature relations in the household to uneven urban environmental problems and governance structures. She concentrates in particular on environmental justice such as gendered and racialized experiences and knowledges of urban natures. Her research has focused on Managua, Nicaragua and more recently, Montréal. She is on the editorial board of several academic journals, including the environmental humanities journal, The Trumpeter.
